But new research suggests that the brainy birds may be even smarter than was previously thought. Given a complex problem and an assortment of tools, New Caledonian crows came up with a creative solution that hints at higher-order thinking.

  Every year Austria’s Green lake undergoes a dramatic transformation. During the winter months, the lake is only around two metres deep, but when the ice melts and flows down from the nearby mountains in the summer, the water level rises to over ten metres.
